Any dog owner will tell you how their furry-four-legged friends are like family to them (sometimes as much or more than their two-legged human counterparts). Dog owners are often chasing after fun and pet-friendly activities to do. Louisiana may be a sportsman’s paradise, but it’s also a pretty nice place for man’s best friend as well.
Pet-Friendly Hotels
For accommodations, we recommend using your Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation member benefit for a preferred rate at certain hotels. Choice Hotels, for example, offers members a discount at participating hotels and operates more than 3,500 pet-friendly hotels across the United States, including in Louisiana.
Free Louisiana Dog Parks
If you aren’t looking to make a whole trip out of it, here’s a list of a few pet-specific parks to take advantage of, found all over our state.
Pelican Bark Park (Mandeville)
Located not too far from New Orleans, the Pelican Bark Park has over four acres for your pet to roam and play. No need to worry about them not playing well together, with divided areas for big and small pups alike.
BREC Dog Parks (East Baton Rouge Parish)
The Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge (BREC) operates six dog parks across the parish. Most locations feature separate areas for large and small dogs, water stations, and pavilions. Several of the parks are sponsored by Raising Canes in memory of the restaurant’s first mascot, Raising Cane I.
Camellia City Bark Park (Slidell)
Truly a dog’s paradise, your four-legged friend will want to spend all day at Camellia City Bark Park. Whether it’s the play pools, the water station or the obstacle course, there’s no shortage of fun to be had here.
Pet-Friendly State/National Parks
Louisiana recently added pet-friendly cabins to over half of the state parks, so there’s no better reason to make it a longer vacation since your fur baby can tag along. However, you should be aware there is a $40 per dog charge with a limit of two dogs per cabin limit.
Palmetto Island State Park (Abbeville)
Palmetto Island State Park is located on the Vermilion River, giving you an authentic experience of all the great outdoors in southern Louisiana. Interior lagoons have some great fishing and canoeing if you want to hit the water.
Lake Claiborne State Park (Homer)
With pet-friendly areas that offer great hiking and camping, Lake Claiborne State Park has tons to do for both you and your pup. When you’ve made your way out of the woods, there’s a sandy beach your dog is going to love running and splashing along.
